When you land Bangkok there are two ways to get to Chiang Rai where you will be volunteering with us. First, you can fly which is about 40 minutes to Chiang Rai. Secondly you can catch a bus which takes around 12 hours. If you fly it costs around 80 US$ and if you take a bus it costs you around 30 US$. If you plan to take a bus please catch a VIP bus which is comfortable and convenient and take a bus that leave in the evening so that you spend 12-hour trip on the bus sleeping and get to Chiang Rai in the very next morning.
We will then come and pick you up at the airport or bus station if you tell us of your arrival time in advance and take you to our organization base where you have a chat with Dr. David regarding his organization and the work you will be doing in the days to come. After the chat you will be taken to town to purchase all the necessary things like rations and medical supplies that will probably last for about a week or so. You will be also buying things that you might need to take to the villages, it can be for yourself and for the children you will meet in the villages. This shopping probably takes about 3-4 hours. You will also have to take photos which are about 2 inches big size if you don't have at least two with you. You will need these photos to make volunteer I.D card and for the record in our organization's volunteer profile.
You are again back to the base from town and get your volunteer I.D done. After that you pack up things you will need for a week and load all the rations, bags, medical supplies, drinking water bottles and other necessary things onto the truck and then head off to the village.
When you get to the village you will be split to a group of 2-4 volunteers to a host family's house where you will be staying for about 2-3 days depending on the projects until moving onto another village. Meals will be prepared and served by the host family. In the villages people normally go to bed early and get up early.
Depending on the projects your day begins before and after breakfast. Some time the day is long and hard depending on the projects. Normally all these projects begins before breakfast with a small meal and then heavy meal is served after one or two hours of working on the project. And another small meal is again served at about noon and then heavy meal again is served at dinner time.
After we are done with the projects we move onto another villager. Depending on the funds we may do similar or different projects.
