To increase society's acceptance of underprivileged and marginalized hill-tribes

Where There Is No Doctor' in the hill-tribes is a volunteer run, non-profit medical social organization in Thailand helping the poor, underprivileged and marginalized hill-tribe communities of Northern Thailand.

Working and volunteering primarily in two sub-districts of Chiang Ria, the organization moves from village to village giving free medical treatment, building toilets and clean water supply, and do many other social activities.  Through our continued efforts, the communities we serve are able to live a healthier and better quality of life.

I volunteered with Dr. David and thought you might like a first hand account of what it's like. Before I arrived, I had obviously read about the work he's been doing with his organization (Where There Is No Doctor) and figured it was something I wanted to be a part of (after all I signed up to volunteer for three weeks), but it wasn't until I actually met him and saw firsthand what he does that I was fully sold on what I was getting into. Unfortunately, as you probably know there are many organizations out there who, unlike Dr. David, use funds generated from volunteers and others for shall we say "less than honorable" purposes. Hill Tribe Volunteer Programs

This volunteer program offers you a safe, meaningful, fun and low cost way to experience hill-tribe culture whilst doing something that counts. Working alongside Dr David, you will travel from village to village in the remote hill-tribes of two sub-districts of Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand, assisting him whilst he gives medical advice and treatment.

You will get to experience the real life of these peoples, eating with the local families and staying in their bamboo huts. Through Dr David’s knowledge of their languages and background, you will get to learn about their local culture and traditions. Mealtimes are a bonus with hoards of villagers gathering to meet you and share their stories.

“I spent 2 months in Thailand and, of all my experiences, this was the most meaningful, interesting and exciting time. Dr David’s work is wonderful and it was great to have been a part of that even for a short while.” (Volunteer 2005)

Short and long-term volunteer programs can be arranged, offering participants exposure to hill-tribe life and living, as well as a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a difference among those who most need it.

Medical Project
This is a medical project which we operate in 38 hill tribe villages in the hills. We give free medical treatments to the sick hill tribes in a village bamboo  hut as we move around in the region. We normally stay 2-3 days in a village while we do the clinic. For more information............

Sanitation and Water Project
This is a sanitation and water supply project that we do in the above 38 hill tribe villages. Since most of the illnesses we come across in our daily medical clinic are illnesses that related to low sanitation and poor water supply, we meet the underlying causes by installing good sanitation and running water supply in the villages in the hills.

Education Project
As a Chinese saying goes “ Teach a man how to fish for his life instead of giving him a fish every day”, we try to educate as many hill tribe kids as possible. Education is a must for every hill tribe as the Thai citizenship is very sparingly given to the communities due to lack of education and knowledge of the local Thai language in the communities. Education and knowledge of the language means a lot to the communities as this is the only and right way to bridge the communities and the human rights.  The education will make them free and more acceptable in the societies. Livestock Project
This is the livestock project that we do in the hill tribe villages.  The main objectives are to decrease the malnutrition cases and improve community health as a whole, and to improve the economic of the communities.  There are lots of malnutrition cases among the babies, children and pregnant women, and even seen among men. As far as economic concern, some hill tribe families don’t even make 20 US$ a month.  For more information....
